In April Sarah Newton (BEHS), Wisconsin's Junior Miss, teamed up with other local Junior Miss representatives Patricia Paskov (BEHS), Brookfield's Junior Miss, and Katie Shannon (BCHS), Hartland's Junior Miss, to collect bikes for the DreamBikes non-profit corporation. DreamBikes employs teens from the Boys and Girls Club of Milwaukee in an effort to educate and mentor underpriviled kids, giving them a marketable skill. The donated bikes from Brookfield were refurbished and given to children at the Boys and Girls Club. Together with a local Girl Scout troup from Dixon Elementary, led by Sheila Buechel, the girls were a part of a local effort that collect over 350 bikes. The bike drive, sponsored by YPO (Young Presidents Organization), culminated in the opening day celebration at the DreamBikes location in downtown Milwaukee. The Junior Miss girls participated in the event by recycling unsalvagable donated bikes and assembling new bikes. The volunteer project is a culminating activity for the girls' Be Your Best Self community service project for the Junior Miss program. Newton will present her project for review to the America's Junior Miss scholarship committee next week.
