Officers Shoot, Kill Man in Loxley
LOXLEY, Ala. (WPMI) The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead. Police at the scene tell Local 15 News it all started as a non-violent domestic dispute.
It happened around 1:30 Monday morning at a house on County Road 49 in Loxley. Police told Local 15's Darwin Singleton a wife and husband were struggling over a gun, that's when the wife was shot.
Law enforcement officers say domestic calls are the most dreaded, and often the most dangerous. And it was proven in Loxley Monday, domestic calls can also be the most deadly.
Ruth Scott and her daughter Charlene Collins don't know a great deal about the couple that lives next door the them, but they do know this...
"Oh, yes. Wonderful neighbors, good neighbors, good Christian people."
Charlene also knows they were dealing with something very serious in their lives. Very serious.
"Yes, sir. He had cancer," Scott said.
But sometime shortly after midnight, something in the lives of their good neighbors went terribly bad. Loxley Police were called to a domestic argument. When they walked inside, that argument turned deadly.
"About 3 o'clock. There were lots of lights coming through our bedroom window, and we got up to see what it was, and they already had the place taped off, a crime scene," added Scott.
Loxley Police knew they were responding to a domestic situation. Even as the officers were pulling into the driveway, 911 operators were telling them shots had been fired inside the house. And once inside, investigators say the two Loxley officers say a man and woman struggling on a bedroom floor.
"The female appeared to be bleeding. She was shot. The officers ordered the subject several times to drop the weapon and surrender. He refused to do so and, subsequently turned the weapon towards the officers. And when he did, the officers fired and shot him," said Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Captain Steve Arthur.
They would later learn that man and woman were husband and wife. The officers' shots would be fatal to the husband. The wife was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand.
Scott said she now worries about her neighbor who has gone from caretaker to widow in one fateful night.
"Just tell her we love her and we're thinking about her and we hope everything will turn out good for her. And we really hate to hear it because they were good neighbors and fine people," said Scott.
Names of both the husband and wife are being withheld until family can be notified. Because this in an officer-involved shooting, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is leading an independent investigation.
