Whitley Elementary Dedication Today
PRICHARD, Ala. (WPMI) About 400 students moved into their brand new school two weeks ago. Sunday evening, Mobile County Public School officials will hold a dedication for that school in Prichard.
Whitley Elementary School, built with $10.5 million in federal stimulus funds, opened to its students October 14.
The principal said her students are in a beautiful place.
"They're in a safe place, a wonderful place", said principal JaaDaa Holcombe.
It serves nearly 400 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Whitley is one of the first schools in the state of Alabama built under a new requirement that a portion of the campus be designated as a tornado shelter.
The library and surrounding hallway and restroom facilities have walls that can sustain 200 mph winds.
The original school was built in the 1960s, and is currently in the demolition process.
