Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has been ruled out of the World Baseball Classic after suffering a strained right forearm during batting practice before Team USA's exhibition game against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Teixeira, who was expected to start at first base for Team USA, experienced tightness on the inside of his right forearm and was a late scratch. Tampa Bay Rays utilityman Ben Zobrist replaced Teixeira at first base.

X-rays came back negative, but Teixeira is expected to miss the next 7-to-10 days with the ailment.

Team USA opens pool play in the WBC on Friday against Mexico.
