PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - A lighthouse dating to the 1830s is being rebuilt on a new site in Pascagoula.
The Round Island Lighthouse was badly damaged by Hurricanes Georges and Katrina.
The Sun Herald reports that J.O. Collins Contractor of Biloxi is restoring the lighthouse, which was moved from Round Island to the eastern end of the U.S. 90 bridge in Pascagoula.
Willie Alston of Pascagoula and Kenneth Jones of Biloxi are chipping off oyster shells and other marine life that stuck to its base during seven years under water.
Jones says they'll build a wooden form, lay bricks, install a spiral staircase and mount the restored lantern.
The Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society website says private donations and federal and state grants are paying for the work.
