(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) A $41,000,000 project to modernize the 91 year old federal building and courthouse in Birmingham is on track to be completed next September.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. General Services Administration tells The Birmingham News in an email that "the project is nearly 60 percent complete."

The official said the floors of the Robert S. Vance Federal Building and Courthouse have been gutted, and structural, plumbing and electrical systems have been addressed. The cleaning of roof and exterior stone is also nearly done.

Bankruptcy court and administrator offices, and the offices of the state's two U.S. senators, have been housed in the Financial Center office building during construction.

The U.S. Probation Office has remained on a floor of the Vance building that's already renovated.
