(PASCAGOULA, Miss.) - Jackson County Tax Collector Joe Tucker is scheduled to mail out the county's 60,000 property tax statements by Thursday.

Payment is due Feb. 1, but there's an advantage to paying early.

Tucker tells The Sun Herald residents who pay their property taxes before the end of the year are eligible to deduct them from their 2011 Federal Income Taxes.

The statements being mailed reflect taxes owed for calendar year 2011.

The county charges a penalty on payments after Feb. 1.

Kenny Flanagan, spokesman for Jackson County, said property owners who owe taxes from a prior year must pay those taxes before paying property taxes for 2011.
