(GULFPORT, Miss.) The Mississippi Department of Transportation conducted a ceremony dedicating a portion of U.S. Highway 49 as the Lieutenant Robert J. Curry Memorial Highway.

The Sun Herald reports Curry, a Gulfport police officer, was president of S.T.O.R.M., the Sobriety Trained Officers Representing Mississippi; a trained hostage negotiator; and a master DUI instructor. He was killed in a motorcycle accident while on duty in 2008.

During the 2009 state legislative session, House Bill 197 was passed designating a segment of U.S. 49 in Gulfport.

Gulfport's Robert J. Curry Public Safety Center, which houses the Police Department and Municipal Court, is also named in honor of Curry, whose wife, Leslee Curry, is a Gulfport police lieutenant.
