(TALLAHASSEE, Fla.) - Two lawmakers have filed proposals that would let Florida's citizens "veto" certain laws passed by the Legislature.
Rep. Richard Steinberg, a Miami Democrat, and Sen. Paula Dockery, a Lakeland Republican, are sponsoring the proposed state constitutional amendments (HJR 1231, SJR 1490).
The Legislature opens its 2012 session on Tuesday.
The proposals are based on similar provisions in other states.
If the Legislature passes such an amendment it would go on the November ballot, where it would need 60 percent approval.
Dockery said wealthy special interests now hold most political power.
She said the citizens' veto would put that power where it belongs - in the hands of the people.
It wouldn't, though, apply appropriation bills or emergency legislation to preserve public peace, health or safety.
