(PASCAGOULA, Miss.) - The city of Pascagoula has asked local lawmakers to support a higher restaurant and hotel tax to help fund construction of a new community center.
The Mississippi Press reports that Mayor Robbie Maxwell and other city officials met Thursday with lawmakers.
The 2012 session begins Tuesday in Jackson.
Maxwell says the city wants to city residents to have the chance to vote on a 1 percent tax increase on prepared food and 3 percent hotel/lodging tax increase.
Among other issues, the city also would like an increase in the maximum amount it can charge property owners whose buildings or lots aren't up to code, from $20,000 to $75,000 or more.
Maxwell says the city hopes lawmakers will support legislation that would result in a decrease in property insurance costs.
