BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Nairi the orangutan has celebrated her first birthday at the Birmingham Zoo.
That the birthday is significant because Nairi is the only orangutan born in 2011 at an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums institution in North America.
During a birthday party held by the zoo Saturday, Nairi clutched her mother Lipz and opened presents of vegetables and treats. A crowd watched as they tore open the gift-wrapped boxes and shared the contents.
The orangutan species is classified as critically endangered due to palm oil plantations and deforestation in their natural habitats.
