(MONTGOMERY, Ala.) - Opening statements are set to begin in the retrial of Alabama's gambling corruption case in Montgomery.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson kept attorneys working late for three days until they picked 12 jurors and four alternate jurors Wednesday evening.

He ordered attorneys back to court at 7 a.m. Thursday to hear pre-trial motions and said the jury will hear opening statements at 9 a.m.

The retrial was necessary because the original trial ended in August with the jury unable to decide 32 counts against six defendants.

On trial are casino owner Milton McGregor, state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, former Sens. Jim Preuitt and Larry Means, casino lobbyist Tom Coker and casino spokesman Jay Walker.

They are accused of buying and selling votes on pro-gambling legislation.
