TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - If you've received a notice saying you owe back taxes to the State of Mississippi, you're not alone.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that the Department of Revenue has sent out 154,300 statements to taxpayers trying to collect a total of nearly $395 million in back taxes, interest and penalties.

Spokeswoman Kathy Waterbury says that so far, the department has collected $1.2 million mailed by 4,000 taxpayers. She didn't know how many paid online, or how much they paid.

The Legislature gave the department an extra $5 million this year to hire people and add technology for the more aggressive tax collections.
