MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama state Rep. Alvin Holmes is asking Gov. Robert Bentley to remove Perry Smith as adjutant general of the Alabama National Guard because he said Smith didn't respond to his request for the race and rank of officers.

Jeremy King, a spokesman for the governor, said Bentley has no plans to remove Smith, which he said is doing a great job. King says Alabama has the finest National Guard in the nation.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Holmes, a Montgomery Democrat, made the request on Thursday. Holmes said David Perry, chief of staff for Bentley, called him Thursday afternoon and said he would make the information available to him.

Holmes maintains that Smith has a legal obligation to respond to inquiries from members of the state Legislature.
