(MONTGOMERY, Ala.) - State officials say some of those who lost their jobs due to deadly tornadoes that hit the state Monday may be eligible for unemployment compensation.

State Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees said people should contact his agency if they are no longer able to report to work because their place of employment was destroyed or damaged to the point where it is no longer accessible or if they are no longer able to get to work as a result of Monday's storms.

Individuals who need to file a claim can call 1-866-234-5382 or by visit the Department of Industrial Relations' website at http://www.dir.alabama.gov.

Surtees said Alabama has not received a federal disaster declaration, but additional benefits may be available if Alabama gets a declaration.

Monday's storms claimed two lives in Jefferson County and caused more than 100 injuries.
