(GULFPORT, Miss.) Harrison County will open a new elementary school in time for the 2014-15 school year to deal with the ever-increasing number of students.

The Sun Herald reports Superintendent Henry Arledge and members of the school board broke ground Wednesday on River Oaks Elementary, which is being built on Three Rivers Road, a few miles from Three Rivers Elementary.

Arledge said the number of students has increased every year since Hurricane Katrina, and he expects that trend to continue.

In the past few years, the district added West Harrison High School and built a new D'Iberville High.

The district has 20 schools and more than 12,000 students, the fourth-largest district in the state. Arledge says the number of students increased between 400 and 500 students this year.
