GULFPORT, Miss. (WPMI) - A Gulfport woman has been charged with felony child abuse after police say she struck her 9-year-old son in the head with a bat.

The Sun Herald reports Kizzie Margaret Williams is in the Harrison County jail on a $50,000 bond pending a hearing by Judge Diane Ladner.

Police said that over the weekend deputies responded to the Gulfport home on a welfare concern and found the boy bleeding from a cut on his head. He was taken to Garden Park Hospital, where he was treated and released to the Department of Human Services.

Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said the investigation indicated the mother had struck the boy in the head with a bat.

It was unclear whether Williams had an attorney.
