GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) U.S. District Judge Walter Gex has sentenced a Gulfport man to a 51 month prison term for his role in a federal gun trafficking ring involving members or associates of the Simon City Royals street gang.

Derrick Lee Rowell was sentenced on Wednesday. He was indicted on charges of conspiracy, transfer of an unregistered firearm and engaging in the business of selling firearms without a license.

The Sun Herald reports Rowell pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge in October and the remaining two charges were dropped.

At a court appearance early on, Rowell's wife described him as an avid gun collector who sometimes sold weapons as a hobby.
