TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay-area authorities say the Connecticut school massacre and doomsday scenarios based on the Mayan calendar have prompted a string of school threats that have overwhelmed deputies.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says none of the threats about shootings or other acts of violence on Friday has proven to be viable. Cpl. Jason Napoli tells The Tampa Tribune that deputies are "extremely overwhelmed" as they investigate each one.

Napoli says most of the threats were made through social media. About 10 middle and high schools were named. Two teens have been arrested in separate incidents of making threats toward their schools.

The county sent deputies to elementary schools this week because of the Connecticut shooting. Friday is supposedly when ancient Mayans prophesized the end of the world.
