BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WPMI) - Authorities say a fire at a Birmingham landmark destroyed thousands of dollars of items used to host weddings.

Employees of Sloss Furnaces say wedding materials worth an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 were completely destroyed in the Thursday blaze. They included sewn linens, glassware and other items.

WBRC-TV reports that no one was injured in the blaze, which started in a building used to store the wedding items.

Sloss Furnaces Executive Director Bob Rathburn said the fire was so intense it melted the glass on a door. He said a maintenance worker noticed the fire around 7 a.m. Thursday. Fire officials were still investigating the cause.

Sloss Furnaces is a National Historic Landmark that hosts weddings and other events. The former industrial site produced iron for nearly 90 years, fueling Birmingham's growth.
