(BILOXI, Miss.) A Biloxi police officer fatally shot a pit bull after it charged at an animal control officer and a patrol officer who came to her aid.

Police Sgt. Jackie Rhodes says the incident happened Monday after police received a complaint that a stray dog had bitten an adult in a neighborhood just west of Keesler Air Force Base.

The Sun Herald reports the dog attacked the animal control officer and tried to bite her. Rhodes says it then tried to attack a patrol officer, who fired one shot, killing it.

Police were not immediately able to identify the dog's owner. Its remains were taken to the Humane Society of South Mississippi for rabies testing.

The city has a leash law and ordinances with procedures on dealing with dog complaints.
