DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man is charged with drug trafficking after sheriff's deputies say they found 16 pounds of marijuana in his SUV when they tried to pull him over for a traffic ticket.

The Dothan Eagle reports 33-year-old Vantwain Lashun Stokes tried to flee when deputies attempted to stop him for a traffic violation on Highway 431. Deputies managed to catch Stokes and noticed a strong odor in his car. Authorities say they found a duffel bag stuffed with marijuana in the cargo section of the vehicle.

Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox says the drug bust Thursday prevented drug dealers from selling the marijuana in the community.

Stokes was jailed on $251,000 bond in Henry County. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.
