MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A state lawmaker plans to introduce legislation that would allow schools to arm certain employees.

Republican state Rep. Kerry Rich of Albertville says he believes the plan would stop violent incidents similar to the Connecticut elementary school shooting.

Rich says he hopes to pre-file his bill before the Legislature begins its 2012 session on Feb. 5.

The lawmaker says he expects his plan and others will be discussed at a meeting Jan. 9 with legislators, law enforcement and education officials about responding to school violence.

Rich says his bill would be focused on schools that can't afford to hire resource officers.
