(FAIRHOPE, ALA. ) - Fairhope Police are connecting with residents in and around their community hoping to curb crime in their own backyards.
A couple of months ago, homeowners in the Montrose area called LOCAL 15 News to tell us about a rash of burglaries.
Now homeowners in Montrose and the Hawthorne Glen and Quail Creek subdivisions have Neighborhood Watch programs as a tool to keep their communities safe. Police are hoping property owners will be the first eyes and ears for law enforcement.
Sylvia Jackson has lived in the Quail Creek subdivision for more than 10 years now.
"There's always going to be and incident or some crime something missing out of a garage you know the times are changing and you just have to be aware that things can happen, " she says.
By no means has the neighborhood gone bad, but folks who live here say forming a watch group is the first step to making sure it doesn't turn downhill.
"The importance of locking the house, the garage and not leaving window open at night. It's things we know and have known through the years but we've forgot," says Jackson.
"It's about learning who lives in your neighborhood. Which cars belong in your neighborhood. Learning which cars belong and don't belong. Using the resources that are already there, the joggers, the walkers, the pet walkers," says Fairhope Police spokesperson Sgt. Craig Sawyer.
