(SEMINOLE, Ala.) 1,300 acres of land in Baldwin County near the Florida line have been turned to blackened ash by wildfires.
Dozens of volunteer firefighters teamed with the Alabama Forestry Commission think they've gotten the blaze contained, for the most part - but there are still plenty of hot spots that could flare up at any moment.
Crews are trying to stay ahead of the spreading fire, they even go out in anticipation of where the fire might spread and burn the land. That prevents the fire from spreading sometimes, but it's not a sure-fire method of stopping a blaze.
Today, crews were worried that they may have been caught inside a rapidly spreading fire that they couldn't get out of. Thankfully, the crews managed to make their way out.
Even though our area is under extreme drought conditions, it may have actually been a storm, in particular the lighting, that sparked the blaze.
At last check Tuesday evening, there were 12 active wildfires in Alabama, and half of those were in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.
In the past month the state has seen over 320 wildfires, burning over 8,000 acres of land.
