(MOBILE, Ala.) - The three remaining suspects convicted in the robbery and shooting death of Kyser Miree will learn their fates at a sentencing hearing Friday afternoon.
To the courts they're known as Michael Lee, Bo Taylor, Jamal Lang and Ernest Wiggins. But to the family of Kyser Miree, they're known simply as killers. "I'll be glad not to think of those - really any of the 4 of those boys again, who did what they did," said Miree's father Ben.
For what the four did comes justice. Lee is already serving a life sentence for pulling the trigger in the April 2010 robbery and shooting. Taylor, Lang and Wiggins made deals with prosecutors to testify against Lee.
Reached by phone at his Birmingham home Thursday evening, Ben Miree said he would attend Friday's sentencing. "I hope [during] the obscurity of the time they spend in jail, they will gain grace and wisdom they failed to recognize while they were free citizens," he said.
The highly publicized case was the result, prosecutors said, of four men looking for someone to rob. During the investigation, it was revealed the men followed Miree's roommate home after seeing him take money out of an ATM. When the men knocked on the door, Miree answered and the men stormed in armed with guns.
During his trial, Lee's defense attorneys claimed the gun went off accidentally. The three co-defendants testified Lee shot Miree after he begged for his life. "I can't help but be enraged when I see those boys because of what they did, I don't think that my temper should be lost or lost for good, but I think it's only human nature."
Mr. Miree's temper may eventually get lost in the shadow of the 23 years of life his son lived. "I think about Kyser every single day of my life and I'll think about him as the smartest, funniest and most genuine, and all together most admirable young man any of us have ever known."
