A local group is stepping up to help ease the burden for some of the most needy in our communities.
They're spending part of their weekend performing an important job that helps put food on tables.
As NBC 15’s Lindsay Bramson tells us---a group of young people spent Saturday afternoon helping those less fortunate.
Kristen Delaney is just one of many people going through boxes of food today donated to the Bay Area Food Bank.
These young volunteers are sorting through it, making sure the food is ready to be put on the shelves for people to buy.
She's part of the volunteer group; United Way Young Leaders.
Delaney says, "it makes me appreciate all the things that we have and it also just makes you feel good to come out on a Saturday morning and know that you're helping a bigger, better good. It just makes you feel good."
They're doing it to help others, but it's also a way to help themselves.
Paul Giardina is the director for the United Way Young Leaders
He says, "Our young leaders society is a group of people ages 21-40 who just want to be more involved in the community.
“ We wouldn't be able to do what we do with out volunteers."
Meredith Simmerman works for the Bay Area Food Bank.
She says thanks to these volunteers, non-profit organizations are able to come to the warehouse and buy the food.
Simmerman also says, "they bring the food to those who need it--homeless, single mothers, grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, people who have lost their jobs."
The United Way Young Leaders is made up of more than 200 members.
The Bay Area Food Bank says because of the bad economy, people are not donating as much food as they use too.
