(WETUMPKA, Ala.) - It's been one week since a University of South Alabama student was shot to death by a campus police officer. Saturday, Gil Collar was laid to rest in his hometown of Wetumpka, Ala.
It was a packed house as family, friends and supporters gathered to pay their final respects to Collar, who was just 18-years-old.
From those who had just met him, to folks who had known Collar his whole life, everyone will remember Gil Collar the same way.
"He was always smiling. He was just an adorable sweetheart," said Alyson Stauder.
"He wasn't anything like how the news is depicting him," said Jessica Perez.
Friends say Saturday's funeral was a perfect portrayal of his personality.
"Gil always prayed before his match, every single match. And they had a picture of him kneeling down," said Perez. "We were 7, and it was me and my best friend and Gil, and he was like Jessica...and he sticks a coco puff up his nose, and then gives it to my best friend cause she didn't see it, and says eat this.. And she ate it!"
The Collar family attorney, Jere Beasley, has spoken to the media several times but the family has requested he not make any more comments until the investigation is complete.
