(WETUMPKA, Ala.) - It's been one week since a University of South Alabama student was shot to death by a campus police officer. Saturday, Gil Collar was laid to rest in his hometown of Wetumpka, Ala.

It was a packed house as family, friends and supporters gathered to pay their final respects to Collar, who was just 18-years-old.

From those who had just met him, to folks who had known Collar his whole life, everyone will remember Gil Collar the same way.

"He was always smiling. He was just an adorable sweetheart," said Alyson Stauder.

"He wasn't anything like how the news is depicting him," said Jessica Perez.

Friends say Saturday's funeral was a perfect portrayal of his personality.

"Gil always prayed before his match, every single match. And they had a picture of him kneeling down," said Perez. "We were 7, and it was me and my best friend and Gil, and he was like Jessica...and he sticks a coco puff up his nose, and then gives it to my best friend cause she didn't see it, and says eat this.. And she ate it!"

The Collar family attorney, Jere Beasley, has spoken to the media several times but the family has requested he not make any more comments until the investigation is complete.

So Gil Collar is a 'dead horse' is he? Move on you say? I suspect your tune would be different if Mr. Collar were your son, brother, nephew, or friend. Did you really think before you wrote that crass, insensitive comment?

@JayHeimdal: I'm beginning to think you and I are the only sane people who post comments here. Or at least the only two people who aren't influenced by a media that is little more than another branch of government. How many naked Grateful Dead concert goers over the decades that the band toured were shot to death while under the influence of LSD or other hallucinogens? I don't know of any and most every one in their audience was under the influence LSD at every show. Take a look at a Youtube video entitled 'Miami Zombie Attack Prank!' I think the USAPD officer was scared and likely as superstitious as those people being chased by the 'zombie' in that video. The USAPD officer thought he had a real life zombie on campus and but a bullet into Gil Collar's chest murdering him.

Cops are trained to not allow a suspect (perpetrator, college student) to gain access to their weapon. Had the young man gotten ahold of the cops duty weapon- he could have killed 15 people. The cop did his job. It is stupid at this point to try and misjudge him. If you think the cop did wrong- then you should join the force and put yourself out there at midnight and deal with it. The you can show us all how to be noble. This has been a most unfortunate tragedy. Efforts should concentrate around preventing this from happening again. A stricter enforcement of drug laws is a start. Perhaps we should increase jail time and punishments for drug offences?

@joesmith ... GET A GRIP ... Generations of college students and college-aged youngsters have experimented with recreational drugs for about 5 decades now, ever since the 60s when mandatory military service in debacles like the war in Vietnam caused so many to question the sanity of it all... Any policeman worth serving the citizenry SHOULD BE aware of that FACT... Killing an unarmed college student, OBVIOUSLY under the influence of drugs, when non-lethal force is available is absolutely INEXCUSABLE, a lapse of judgment that demonstrates this 'officer' should never have been on a police force to begin with... To add insult to the parents of the victim injury, the entire matter is being sanitized by the politically-correct media because the real crime committed was by a black police officer and the victim is white... A VERY enlightening article, shedding new light on the lack of judgment from 'Officer' Trevis Austin can be found at DailyMail... Navigate to ... DailyMail dot co dot uk ... and search on site for the article entitled ... Emotional tribute for Alabama student who had taken LSD and was shot dead as he chased campus police officer ... MANY pics there you won't see in the politically-correct US main-stream-media.
