(MOBILE, Ala.) - Two 17-year-old kayakers who had gone missing in Mobile Bay Monday afternoon have been found safe.

A family friend, Dave Buckhaults tells Local 15 they were spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard with thermal imaging.

The Alabama Marine Police were able to pull them from the water around midnight.

They were found two miles south of Gaillard Island.

Buckhaults says the teens were on the brink of hypothermia and were taken to Springhill Hospital.

They are expected to be okay.

Buckhaults says the teens had clung on to one of the kayaks after being overtaken by rough waves since 4 o'clock Monday afternoon.

We're told both teens are lifeguards and good swimmers.

Do they make people pay back the money when they do something stupid? I am thinking if they did maybe we wouldn't have so many budget problems. Stupid act on the kids part. Heroic act on the rescuers part. God must have a plan for them. They, their families, and their friends should thank God everyday for sending the Coast Guard to save them. The Kayak should now be sold or put on a time out till they can somehow prove they are grown up and responsible enough to use it again. Say after they have worked and repaid everyone who looked for them. I can only hope and pray my husband and son don't do any more stupid things.

I have 3 children, grown, and 6 grandchildren, and haved lived in Mobile my entire life. I have camped on Dauphin Island(back in the 60's thru early 70's) on the west end, getting there by dune buggy. I was raised on the beaches of that island and Gulf Shores, spending every wkend on either one. I have fished over 40 Alabama Deep Sea Fishing rodeos, in every weather condition you could possibly imagine. I agree 100% with the comments made concerning the IDIOTIC behavior of these two teens. They made a "concious" decision to kayak in 40mph winds, with the local waters churned into deadly traps. I have surfed the local area for years, and I can say that I have NEVER attempted that particular sport during a tropical system. It's just plain STUPID~! I sincerely hope that these 2 young people do what I would do now that they have been rescued from a certain death, and that is to spend the rest of their lives speaking to young people about NOT putting themselves in situations that could KILL THEM~! They should spend the next YEAR raising money to PAY BACK the money that was spent to rescue them from their STUPID act. Thank you Lord for taking care of all the idiots on the planet, without your help, they would all be dead!

You can't be serious? You signed up and created a Username similar to mine just to attack me? The characterization I made was the wind in my area near the Bay was blowing strong enough to break the limbs off of my trees in my yard when the teens went kayaking. How in the name of God do you get the idea that the statement was comparing tree limbs to a couple of dumb teens that got lost in the Bay? BTW... I'm inside your head and not paying any rent!

There is a "BIG" difference between TV reporters and kids. How about the news media taking the five minutes it would take to teach kids the difference each time? Notta. Again, "monkey see, monkey do". What is logical or benificial about some grown adult intentionally putting themselves in harms way???? It is called a personal thrill. That is all. Try explaining anything else to a child. You would be lying. Just a thrill. No logic nor benefit.

There is a BIG difference between a TV Reporter in the midst of a Tropical Storm or Hurricane being shown on TV and two irrespoonsible kids paddling out into the rough seas of the Bay. Reporters are being PAID to report and bring the dangers and images to the viewers via telecast and warn them of the conditions. They are also enhancing their careers and providing recorded video of their self-professed courage to report from the center of the crisis. Some Reporters and Jornalists like FOX News Geraldo Rivera and CNN's Anderson Cooper have greatly benefitted from footage of themselves in harms way. These two kids I'm sure had some second guessing after sundown of their decision to paddle out into the Bay in the choppy waters and high winds. In any event the story had a happy ending and all is well.

Kinda reminds me of weather folks standing out in hurricane winds for the thrill, but telling other folks to stay inside where it is safe. "Monkey see, monkey do". What do you expect? It starts with adults leading by example.

@Oh Really, I did my job and raised my children right. They are both grown now and live their own responsible lives. They were taught from an early age that their actions have consequences and their behavior not only effects them but others as well. I taught them that they have to have personal responsibility, that things that they do can't be blamed on anyone and everyone else. It seems that today's kids look for anyone that they can blame for their own actions, and it seems to be the popular and consistent thing to do (See Pres.Barack Obama). If everyone raised their children right then nobody else would have to step up and do it for them. It's not my job to substitute as a Parent or Mentor for a kid that has sorry and lazy Parents that can't do the job they sought and chose. I laugh at the Lazy Liberals that say it's everyone else's duty and job to pitch in and raise someone else's children for them. I raised mine right and they should raise theirs right too. If you make a conscience decision to have children then you should be prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to raise them up to become productive members of society. I don't have to tell you what is going on in society today from Parents not raising their children properly, the proof is right in front of your face.

Borned, borned, borned - NOW you sound just like all the parents you scorn and blame - "my son would never do that." I pray he never does anything to embarrass you for he would have hell to pay from dad. (If you are that great of a parent you should have gone into early childhood education and spared the world from all these "selfish", "stupid" kids who do "indefensible" things. It's not too late to help.

@Oh Really.. My Son would never put himself in harms way, I taught him better. He would not do something dumb as to cause others to risk their lives to save him from an act of stupidity. One comment indicated that these two are experienced on the water, if that's the case then they should have known better than to paddle out into the Bay in choppy water with gusting winds of over 40 MPH. Their acts are indefensible and totally selfish. Sure I am happy they were found alive but this entire situation could have been avoided if common sense would have been used.
