(MOBILE, Ala.) Mobile police say Officer Steven Green, 36, is the officer who was killed by a robbery suspect.

Green was taking Lawrence Wallace to jail on a robbery charge when Wallace stabbed Green and stole his patrol car. Green later died at the hospital.

Wallace then hid under a house off Dauphin Island Parkway. He was eventually shot and killed by officers on the scene.

Another Mobile Police Officer Mark Johnson was shot in the arm by Wallace. He was treated at the hospital and released. We've learned Johnson is the husband of Mobile County Spokesperson Nancy Johnson.

Green had been a Mobile police officer since May 2010. Chief Micheal Williams said in a statement it is a sad day for Mobile police and law enforcement and their sympathy goes out to Green's wife and family.

My sympathies to the family on the loss of this good police man. What nobody has mentioned is how this killer managed to do all this damage with handcuffs on behind his back? Did he have a key or what? Or were his hand-cuffs removed prematurely?

If he stabbed the Police Officer with the bling (medallion) he had around his neck that is astounding! How does he spend all that time at Police Headquaters being interogated and nobody sees the virtual weapon hanging around his neck? He even shows it to the cameras and basically tells the public what he is about to do. It's a complete breakdown and failure by everyone that came in contact with this killer after he was arrested. When I first saw the initial video as it was breaking news I wondered why he (Wallace) was wearing the necklace and had tyvek paper pants on, this was before I even knew he was the suspect that the Police were chasing. Common sense and logiic is you take everything the criminal suspect has on his person like all caps, hats, jewelry, cigarettes, money, coins, lighters, etc away from the suspect once they are handcuffed in custody.

To the news staff...that looks like a handcuff key behind the guys necklace not a knife! My deepest condolences to this officers family. Truly a tragic day in MCSO!

Outside MPD Headquarters just before he was loaded in the Police car he made a reference to "Ron" with Channel 15 and wanted to say hi. Is there a Ron that works at Local-15 and is familiar with this dead killer?

He was probably dead after the first shot...the other three were for good measure. In this case killing this POS saved the taxpayers millions and provided instant closure for the Officers family. A win all the way around unless you a member of Wallace's family! He did it to himself.

I have been the victom of an armed robbery while trying to work and earn a living. My child has also been robbed at work and shot at. All by people that make a choice to steal and harm others rather than do a single minute of honest work. I can understand the want for revenge especially when someone has been killed trying to protect and serve us. That having been said, we have a justice system in our great nation. When first alerted of this situation, many of us knew: that this suspect would be shot and killed and would never see a day of trial. Of course none of us were there and I know that killing a suspect is some times justified for the protection of police and public. I am sad for all involved in this terrible event.

First...my condolences to the officer's family and my best wishes to the injured officers for a speedy recovery. Now for the matter at hand...it seems based on the splintered and incomplete reports, the entire incident was completely avoidable had the arresting officer (less than one year of service) been properly trained and mentored by the MPD. The Dept. has been in a hurry to put additional personnel in service and cut corners. Chief Williams is directly responsible for training, safety and operations of all his employees and the Dept. in general. The Mayor is likewise responsible for oversight of every city dept. including the MPD. In the final analysis, the Mayor and the Chief hold ultimate responsibility for this tragedy.

This is a classic example of why we can not trust our gov't- whether city, county, state, or federal. They "WILL NOT" protect us from criminals. This guy should still be in jail from the last robbery. Now, we have lost a community soldier. He is someone's son, father, husband, brother. We need an accounting from the courts as to why they can not keep these people in jail. The idea that the jails are too full is camelshiet- half those in jail are there for an expired tag or drivers license. Stop arresting people for minor traffic violations, and make room for those who need to be in jail.
