(SUMMERDALE, Ala.) - Rescue workers are calling it the worst case of animal cruelty they’ve ever seen. More than 200 dogs, cats and horses were found caged and starving at Purple Hearted Puppies Animal Shelter in Summerdale.

We've now learned that at least 42 of them had died or starved to death, and some of the dogs had resorted to cannibalism. The two horses had to be put down because they were in such poor condition.

Police are still trying to piece together what led up to the horrible conditions at the so-called rescue center. They believe the owners, Sharon and Roberta Dueitt, simply took off. Today, the investigation has shifted to the Dueitt's home in Robertsdale where more neglected animals have been found.

The mother and daughter were arrested when they showed up at the shelter last night. They claim they left the shelter in the care of employees while they went out of town. They were charged with 20 counts of animal cruelty each, but we've learned the Dueitts have bonded out of jail this morning.

The number of charges they are facing will likely rise as more animals have to be euthanized due to such poor health.

“Surprisingly they attempted to pass the blame onto those that they had hired instead of taking any responsibility themselves,” says Officer Hugh Bohannon with the Summerdale Police Department.

“Everything is just, it's kind of unbelievable,” says rescue worker Steve Williams.

Volunteers were speechless last night as they worked to calm terrified animals and clean cages layered with filth. Dogs frantically scooped up food after not being fed for days or weeks.

“They're starving, they're emaciated, they're malnourished,” says Deneen Balistere with the Baldwin County Humane Society.

Police estimate the animals were abandoned between a week and ten days ago, but volunteers say it’s clear some of them have gone longer than that without eating.

“The only way this can happen is through sheer neglect,” says Williams.

As of early Friday morning, police are searching for at least two more employees of the shelter.

The animals were treated by a vet on scene Thursday night. Some were transported to shelters, while others were moved inside to clean kennels on the property.

Nearly every animal rescue group in the area responded Thursday night, but they still need lots of help. Donations of food, leashes, towels and money are needed, as well as volunteers to help clean.

Most of all, foster homes are needed for the surviving animals. Anyone able to foster a cat or dog can show up at the property starting at 8 a.m. Friday. It’s at 21118 County Road 36 in Summerdale.

There should and must be some blame shared by the elected officials of the community of Summerdale. Just kicking the can down the road to the ADEM or other state agencies is beyond the pale; since local citizens have long complained to the mayor here and others. A POX on their houses, too. (Side bar: who bailed out these trailer trash scum in the first place?)

Typical blood thirsty lynch mobs on here. Seriously people! I guess some are going to call for the two women to be executed. My God! Get some sense folks! The Alabama Prison System is operating at 195% capacity now. Of course these rwo women need to be punished, in the form of being made to take care of some animals in a community service type of way. This hardly calls for prsion time, it won't happen. Mobile has crazy Judges sentencing repeat felony offenders to less than 5 years in prison for killing people and wounding others in the same act. There is no room in prison for these women, the Judges and DA's in Mobile and Baldwin Counties have created a epidemic in repeat offenders that know they won't go to prison because of overcrowding. I say they serve some jail time on the weekends, like 10 weekends, pay a sustanial fine which they probably can't afford either and be banned from ever owning pets again. Lethal injection and Yellow Mama is off the table you pitch fork wielding torch bearing crazies.

Have to put these people in prison for a long time. These poor animals. Somehow, some way we have to be more careful about where these poor creatures are going. We have to keep pushing for more laws and stiffer penalties for animal abusers. God. These poor animals.

Ummm wasn't this a rescue shelter for abused animals???? Does everybody expect to c a bunch of happy & healthy abused animals there????? I think that more facts need to be disclosed to the community about how long had these animals been there? Had each bn seen by a vet upon coming in? We're there files on each animal & was their progression or degression being noted? I mean come on people just because there are sick dogs at a dog rescue shelter doesn't mean that we've found the Adolph Hitler of the animal world.......doesn't mean we haven't ......but I think a lot more information and a little less breaking news story might be safe 4 the humans.......think about the abuse these two women will have now gone thru if they are just doing what they can to save sick dogs end up being inocent until proven innocent in a court of law???? Just tell us more

It's good to see the community step up and help out those animals that can be saved and possibly adopted.

Yea same thing happen with humans, spreading all HIV and TB across glob, may be there should be some shelters, cages and similar treatment for those who are struggling to survive or fired from jobs. The deadliest diseases in the world are spread by human than any other animals. As we wish others don't have right on us, it is same logic pets are not toys, they are living things and should not live or die on some one mercy. They are not born with link to owner. They are born free just like any other living thing on this earth. If given a chance every one will know how to survive or hot to avoid cities and live in their comfort domain. That is how the nature sustains and grows, just not on mercy of humans.

Some people have a hard time seperating animals from humans. If a domestic animal like a cat or dog is left free to roam the streets they will eventually be killed by a vehicle. They contract diseases from the elements and will eventually spread that disease to other animals and species. Viral cats carry a form of HIV that can easily be spread to other wild cats and even tamed cats that are pets. Dogs contract distemper and can easily spread that disease to other dogs that are pets. Pets such as dogs and cats have a life expectancy which is is very short while left in the wild to take care of themselves. If you have a problem with the way dogs and cats are treated when captured from running loose then have your cat or dog fixed so it can never reproduce. Nobody loves cats and dogs as much as I do but the responsiibility lies with the owners of the animals to stop the abuse before it even happens. For each wild and uncared for dog and cat there is a human that can be easily traced back to that animal. The only answer is to capture and sadly destroy the animal to preserve the others that are actually cared for.

This is one big fundamental issue I found in USA. I don't know who designed the law or system that you have to cage pets or put pets to sleep if abandoned by owners. Who the Hell gave such right on the lives of pets to the human society? It should be pretty simple if you like some animals pet them with love, if you can't take care just leave them, they are species born in this nature just like humans and who can survive on their own and can live happy. They have equal right on this planet, food and resources just like us. Caging them and don't let them find its own food, survival, Treating them no good and killing them in name of helping it is so cruel and BS. So called "Country of Freedom" Better learn from "Third world countries"...we let them live as they like, they got equal freedom.
