UPDATE #2: Campus police have just finished up a press conference about the incident. Police say that around 1:23 a.m. officers heard loud banging on the windows of the campus police station. When an officer stepped outside to investigate, he was confronted by Gilbert Collar, who was nude and acting erratically.
Police say Collar rushed toward and verbally attacked the officer repeatedly. The officer attempted to calm Collar, but he continued to press towards the officer in a threatening manner. The officer fired a shot at Collar when he continued to rush towards the officer. Collar was hit in the chest, fell to the ground but got back up and rushed towards the officer again before collapsing and dying.
The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave. His name has not been released.
UPDATE: Police have identified the victim as 18 year old freshman Gil Collar.
(MOBILE, Ala.) - University of South Alabama police shot and killed a student after he attacked officers.
Officials say the victim attacked an officer outside the police department on Stadium Drive. The incident happened around 1:30 a.m.
The identity of the student has not been released.
