MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Winn Dixie is doing its part to help curb the number of hungry children in America.

The grocery store created the Hunger Relief Program. It's designed to allow shoppers to directly donate funds to their local food bank.

By Christmas Eve of last year, more than 29,000 pounds of food was provided to the Bay Area Food Bank and Thursday, Hunger Relief presented the donation.

"The great thing is they open their stock and said, "what do you need?" Unlike in a food drive, where people give what they have, this way we get to get what we need," said Rea Ney, executive director of Bay Area Food Bank.

Ney said the donations will be enough to feed about 5,000 families in the Bay Area.
