(BAY MINETTE, Ala.) April 23 - The Baldwin County School Board has voted to layoff more than 300 teachers and staff and close Vaughn Elementary in Stockton to cut costs.
Board memebers have approved Superintendent Faron Hollinger's reccommendation to layoff 192 teachers and 129 classified workers at the end of the current school year.
School officials say the layoffs and closure of Vaughn Elementary are necessary to cut costs and close funding gaps in the budget.
School spokesman Terry Wilhite says the vote to close Vaughn Elementary was five to one, with one board memeber absent from the meeting.
