(MOBILE, Ala.) - It's not always a crime for a teacher to have sex with a student in Alabama, but some people would like to see that change.

In Florida, the law may soon get harsher. Last week, a house committee approved a bill that would make the punishment harsher on teachers who have sex with students under 18.

Right now, the legal age to consent to sex in Alabama is 16. That's why Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. says, if a teacher has sex with a student who is at least 16, the teacher is not committing a crime.

At Murphy High School, Principal William Smith says he discourages his teachers from getting too close to students.

"They identify too much with the student, start hanging out with them...texting them, that type of thing and before long they've crossed the line," Smith said.

If the legislation in Florida wins final approval, the measure would take effect October 1.

Yesterday we learned that Alabama ranks #1 nationally in traffic fatalities by speeding and #9 in deaths by DUI. Now we learn that teachers can have sex with students and the school system simply does not recommend such activity. What happened to prohibits such activity by law? In the mean time we have the District attorney in Mobile County parading around our state tieing up hundreds of our State Troopers for the purpose of raiding bingo halls????? By doing so, these characters have created a controversey that have led to the lose of jobs and needed revenue for local municipalities. By creating a "negative domino effect" our legislature and courts are being tied up instead of focusing on issues that adversely effect grade school kids or save lives on our state highways. We have Alabama taxpayer refunds being put off because the state of Alabama does not have the money on hand? Sounds like Bob Riley, Mike Tyson and our legislature need to get their priorities in order. Pis-i-g away expensive taxpayer resources like a "dog chasing it's tail" is not their job. Effectively utilizing state revenue to save lives and protect our children is what the taxpayer is expecting.

didnt the BLACK cop have sex with a child ??Didnt JOHN TYSON say 16 is old enough to give concenst and therefore the officer WILL NOT be charged with any crime...So in that case any teacher can have sex with any student as long as they are 16 and its mutual consent,,all they can do is get fired,,NO LAW IS BROKEN,,but the father who goes to he school and beas the hell out of the teacher will get arrested for assault,,,WOW!!!

Oh I can hear Tyson Jr. now...." and with every breath we will rid our state of the horrible, immoral, and socially degrading casinos that have plagued our state" Reporter: "what about teachers having sex with students" Tyson: "I'm not worried about that, now back to the REAL ISSUE....bingo machines". Now of course this is my exageration but you see what I mean. So in the military a member cannot have sex with a subbordinate, I'm sure the DA shouldn't have sex with an ADA and yet he says its fine for a teacher to have sex with a student. Look at the news for Mobile County. We have 6th graders ODing on Rx drugs, murders, rapes, meth houses, the issue of inappropriate relationships between teachers and students, yet DA John Tyson Jr. is traveling all over the state worried sick on how to stop gambling. Um... how come he hasn't raided any bookies that take sports beats or back room poker houses. Oh yeah that's right.... he's going after easily seen and licensed operators in the state. The ones whom employ citizens, pay taxes, provide health care. Yeah, leave the bookies alone, they only employ themselves.

Kinda funny how Ala. cannot have gambling, yet the students can be f**k** by the teachers.
