BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WPMI) The Bay Minette Police Department says a truck backfiring near Baldwin County High School caused concern Friday morning.

It happened around 11 a.m. in front of the school. Police say a truck was stopped southbound on Highway 59, when it backfired twice, leading some to believe shots had been fired.

Baldwin County officials released this statement after the initial report:

"This morning about 11 a.m., a black nissan pick up truck pulled off the highway in front of BCHS and a passenger fired what appeared to be a shotgun into the air. It was not aimed at the school or anybody, it was fired into the air. Two parents saw it. Bay Minette Police immediately responded to look into it. We alerted parents via our rapid notification system."

Through an investigation, police were able to determine that no shotgun was ever fired, and the safety of students and staff was never in jeopardy.
