(MOBILE, Ala.) July 3 - A suspect that was shot three times after attempting to run from a Mobile police officer and getting into a physical altercation with the officer remains in serious but stable condition.

Police say the officer stopped Ricky Landell Lett, Jr., 24, at the Raceway Gas Station at the intersection of Government Boulevard and McVay Drive for a routine traffic stop Thursday afternoon, but Lett tried to run from the officer when asked for identification. Police say the officer attempted to tase Lett, Lett fought the officer for the taser and the officer shot Lett three times.

Lett underwent surgery at USA Regional Medical Center. Ofc. Christopher Levy says Lett is listed in serious, but stable condition.

Mobile County District Attorney says everything suggests a lawful shooting, and the officer was entirely within the line and scope of his duty.

Lett has an outstanding warrant for not appearing in court on identity theft charges. Lett is also a registered sex offender he was charged with sodomy in 2005. Lett faces new charges including assault for attacking the police officer and a felony charge for giving a false name to police.
