MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) The University of South Alabama participated in Monday's National Day of Service.

Volunteers helped with the numerous community activities including building, art and cleaning projects. They also gave their time at local non-profit organizations.

"We have all these students here who have Monday off and instead of sleeping in we decided we'd come out and actually make a difference here and have an impact in our local community," said Stephen Purnell, USA Service Learning Center.

The initiative is sponsored by the USA Center for Academic Service Learning and Civil Engagment.
