DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala (WPMI) The Estuarium at the Dauhphin Island Sea Lab opened its first outdoor touch tank on Saturday.

The “Rays of the Bay” tank contains several species of stingrays and even some sharks!

Dr. John Dindo, Associate Director of the Sea Lab, said that “the Sea Lab has been a steady proponent of hands-on education; we believe that experiential learning leads to life-long learning, and what could be more hands-on than having the ability to stroke a ray or shark?”

The tank boasts a 6,400 gallon size and is operated by an alternative energy source. The exhibit is cost-effective as well as in line with the Labs efforts to promote solar power and other alternative energies.

“We’re so pleased to offer this exhibit so all our visitors, whether they’re local or visiting from around the world, can learn about these creature that inhabit our local waters,” said Dr. John Dindo.
