(MOBILE, Ala.) An Alabama Legislator is pushing for a change in campus security procedures across the state, in light of Gil Collar's death.
"Hopefully some good will come out of this," said Republican State Representative Barry Mask of Wetumpka. He has close ties to Gil Collar's family. Mask lives down the street from Collar's parents in Wetumpka and has known Gil Collar for eight years.
"We just hope there will be a review of all our universities for campus securities to review their protocols and inventory of non-lethal equipment so this doesn't happen again," said Mask.
Mask says he was shocked to hear that officer Trevis Austin and other USA cops don't carry tasers, ever.
Students that protested Wednesday on campus felt the same way.
"This is about getting them the proper tools and training so this doesn't happen again," said one student.
After doing some digging, Local 15 found that the University of South Alabama isn't the only school with this policy.
The University of Alabama Birmingham has the same set up as USA. Campus police carry guns, pepper spray and batons, but not tasers.
At Troy University, all officers carry guns and pepper spray, only some officers carry battons, and only three carry tasers.
Auburn University doesn't even have a campus police department. The city police department took over in 2004.
"I think there should be a statewide standard," said Mask
Mask plans to talk to Attorney General Luther Strange to see what changes can be made.
