BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (WPMI) A jury found Bayou La Batre Mayor Stan Wright guilty of four different charges in federal court Friday.

Wright was convicted of all counts of conspiracy theft concerning programs receiving federal funds, witness retaliation and tampering.

Wright refused to talk to reporters following the jury's verdict.  Wright exited through a back door at the federal courthouse in Downtown Mobile.

Local 15 News tried to reach Wright at his home in Irvington, but nobody answered.

District Attorney Ashley Rich told Local 15 News the now convicted mayor will have to resign from his post, one he held for 12 years, or her office would file a bill of impeachment.

Rich said nothing will be finalized until after the mayor's sentencing hearing, which is set for June 28th.

Residents of Bayou La Batre had mixed feelings about the jury's verdict.

"I'm surprised," Christa Seaward said.  "I don't think he should have been because he's a very great person."

"I love him, he's a great person, he'll help you in any way he can and he helps everybody if they need help."

"I hate it and everything for his family and everything," Robert Seaman said.  "It's just a bad thing.  Money will make people do strange things, bad things."

"I hope things will be better.  I hope things will be better than what it's been."

"I'm disappointed in him for how he did the people," Irvington Resident Malcolm Sprinkle said.  "Hopefully they pick somebody a lot better this time who will make better choices."

What did this cat do before he became the "Boss Hogg" mayor of the Bayou? I heard rumours and read articles in the past where any federal disaster assistance that Bayou La Batre got the funds all had to go through him first and he would get his cut. When you're as dunb as this dude and wear a John Deere ball cap to a Council meeting there is something seriously wrong with your judgement, and prison is your eventual destination if you seek to be a politician/criminal which these to are synonomous with each other.
