(GULFPORT, Miss.) The Army Corps of Engineers will begin maintenance dredging this week in the northern end of the Gulfport Ship Channel.
Spokesman Patrick Robbins tells The Sun Herald that the $2,400,000 available will let the Corps dredge about 2.6 miles of the 14 mile long channel.
He says another $8,000,000 would be needed to bring the entire channel to its authorized depth of 36 feet and width of 300 feet.
The northern end has silted in to about 28 feet.
Ships from tenant DuPont are unloading ore in New Orleans because the Gulfport channel prevents full loads from coming into the port.
