(MOBILE, Ala.)   We're learning new details about what happened leading up to Officer Steven Green's death. Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran is shedding some light on how suspect Lawrence Wallace could have done this.

Cochran watched the surveillance video from Metro Jail, where the attack went down.

"This incident happened as the officer was getting the suspect out of his vehicle, where the assault took place after he had gotten him out of the vehicle," Cochran said. "It was a mortal wound. Very severe assault, happened very quick."

Cochran said Officer Green was suddenly taken by surprise. Wallace had somehow gotten out of his handcuffs while he was being transported in the back of the patrol car.

"It was not readily apparent when the officer got him out of the car. (Wallace) acted as he was still handcuffed," Cochran added.

Cochran said injured Officer Green made his way inside the docket room to try and get help.

"We had a number of staff, nurses, PA's that are part of the staff, immediately responded to the docket room and administered first aid."

At the same time, Wallace made his getaway.

"One of the probation officers attempted to give chase to the suspect, he escaped," said Cochran.

Wallace drove to Dauphin Island Parkway, where he jumped out and hid under a house. Within just hours, officers fatally shot Wallace.
