MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Teachers who have worked in three of Montgomery's public high schools say they witnessed or participated in improper grade changing for hundreds of failing students the last two years.

Teachers also say more grades were changed by school administrators.

Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Thompson called the alleged grade changing "rumors" on Wednesday. She said she is planning to ask the school board to approve the hiring of an outside investigator.

The accusations come about week after Alabama Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice said he will seek raises for K-12 employees. Gov. Robert Bentley recently said he'll consider raises for teachers and support personnel.

The Montgomery Advertiser has spent the past four months investigating allegations made by nearly 30 current and former Montgomery Public Schools employees.

Margaret Bozeman • an hour ago -+ DeleteFlag as inappropriateMontgomery is not the only place this happens. They need to take a close look at Mobile area schools. The high school students in a few of the area schools have been passed along so much that they can't even add 2 + 2. When the teachers refuse to pass them so they can "walk the stage" on graduation day, the teachers are subjected to major harrassment from the administrators. The superintendent needs to get her work clothes on and make surprise visits to these schools.
