(PRICHARD, Ala.) Aug. 19 - The city of Prichard is under fire again after more allegations of neglect at the city's animal shelter emerge.
The Mobile branch of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it has claims from a shelter volunteer that days would pass before suffering animals were euthanized. The ASPCA has written a letter outlining the allegations against the shelter to Prichard Police Chief Lawerence Battiste, who oversees the shelter, as well as the mayor of Prichard.
A local family brought the allegations to NBC 15 News after a local family went looking for their lost dog. The family says it was overwhelmed by animal feces and even saw a dead dog carcass at the shelter.
THE ASPCA is encouraging the city to close the shelter and enter into a contract with the new Mobile County Animal Shelter.
"Let Prichard keep running their animal control officers," Elizabeth Flott, Mobile ASPCA, says. "They have an excellent animal control ordinance. Let their officers enforce their law in Prichard, but those animals let those animals that have to be taken and picked up go to county. Let the county house and feed and care for the animals. Let county adopt the animals into good homes."
Battiste says he will investigate the claims, but he says he has enough staff to take care of the animals and building.
