WASHINGTON (AP) - A tearful President Barack Obama says the country's leaders must "take meaningful action" regardless of politics in response to the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

The president teared up, at times using an index finger to wipe at the corner of his eyes, as he addressed the nation from the White House. He also paused repeatedly as he struggled to keep his composure while speaking of the children - ages 5 to 10 - who had died and the life milestones they now would miss.

He said, quote, "Our hearts are broken."

Shortly before speaking, Obama ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on public grounds through Tuesday.

No further action re gun control???? Armed guards and metal detectors outside of the schools? What about malls, stores, corporations etc? Armed guards and metal detectors everywhere??? There is no reason that I can come up with that allows anyone outside of the military to possess an AK47(not sure if that was one of the guns this individual used). Gun control must be addressed at least as far as certain type weapons are concerned.

Justice was served when the killer was killed. No further action needs to be taken as far as gun control is concerned, except to install metal detectors at every school in the nation. And have armed guards onsite, as well.
