(MOBILE, Ala.) - Everyone from police wives to everyday citizens lined the motorcade route to say goodbye and give heartfelt thanks to Mobile Police Officer Steven Green.
“You don’t have to personally know someone in uniform.” Natasha Pate, a wife of a Mobile police officer, said. “They’re your family regardless.”
Pate along with other police families gathered along the procession route, supporting not only Green’s family, but each other after a blow they’ve all felt.
“We’re not family by blood but we are through blue,” Pate said.
It’s a reminder of the dangers their husbands face day in and day out.
“It just hits home and makes it real,” Karen Jerkins, wife of a Baldwin County Sheriff’s Deputy, said. “Knowing that when [my husband] leaves every day, he may not be coming home.”
Two fire truck ladders draped a giant American flag over the highway as the motorcade passed through. The Blount High School football team lined up with flags.
“Officer Green was a former player and once you’re in the Blount family, you’re always in the Blount family,” coach Kelvin Sigler. “I wanted to teach the players that there’s more than just football. This is real life.”
