(MOBILE, Ala.) Police are warning folks about a phone scam that's circulating the country.

They say consumers usually receive a message telling them to call a phone number with an 809, 284, 649 or 876 area code in order to collect a prize.

The area code is outside the U.S., often in Canada or the Caribbean, so when a call back is made folks are charged with international call rates resulting in extremely high phone bills.

To avoid being scammed, carefully read your phone bill and return calls to familiar numbers only.
