(MOBILE, Ala.) We're learning a lot more about what happened the day Mobile Police Officer Steven Green was killed.
Mobile Police Chief Micheal T. Williams sat down with LOCAL 15 News to give more details about the investigation.
He says Lawrence Wallace had a handcuff key and an edged weapon somewhere on him when he was taken into custody.
"Somewhere between police headquarters and Metro Jail, Mr. Wallace got out of his handcuffs," Williams said. "We found during the autopsy that he had a key. A handcuff key was found in one of his shoes. Wallace kept his hands behind his back as if he was handcuffed. He and the officer walked toward the entry door to the booking area. The officer grabbed for his left hand and when he did Wallace stabbed the officer with an edged weapon. There's been a lot of talk about whether the medallion that Wallace was wearing was the weapon used, I can tell you, that it was not."Williams says the edged weapon was later found inside Green's patrol car. They still don't know where Wallace was hiding it.
It is not MPD's policy to strip search. A standard search was conducted.
Chief Williams will wait until the investigation is complete before deciding if any policy changes need to be made.
